Find out the inspiration for my new pattern, the Weekend Charm quilt. In January, I had to make a trip to the U.S. for some imaging (first mammogram after my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment…..happy to report no evidence of disease!). I visited some fabric shops as one does and picked up some cute beach inspired fabric.

On my return trip, I popped up to Boston to visit my oldest at university for a few days. Of course it was a weekend of snow storms – tours canceled, places closed, and trains delayed – so I got a lot of use out of my hotel room! Since I bought the fabric – I needed a pattern – with no chores to distract me I sat down and worked on it. Unfortunately, I did not have my sewing machine in the hotel room so I could not start testing my math. I did take the occasional break and walk across to a little strip mall close by for a meal. The snow piles in that parking lot were insane! Can you tell I don’t like cold and windy weather?

When designing the pattern, I wanted to use the 5″ squares in the charm pack to their fullest. I played around with some half square triangles and decided I wanted even less cutting! I went with alternating Diamond in a Square blocks and Mosaic blocks. Thus the Weekend Charm – there is minimal cutting and the smaller sizes will come together in a weekend.

The pattern has four sizes (Baby – 39″ x 39″, Throw – 52″ x 65″, TwinXL – 78″ x 104″, and Queen – 91″ x 104″). If you do not have any charm packs or want to use up scraps, there are instructions on how to make the Weekend Charm with either yardage or scraps.

I am going to make a second quilt using some red, white, and blue fabric in honor of the USA’s 250th birthday! So keep an eye out for pictures of that version coming soon.
