I am a silver girlie…meaning I don’t like yellow gold jewelry and will always gravitate towards silver, platinum, and white gold. That being said occasionally I want to add a little razzle dazzle to a quilt. I found that fabric embellished with a little metallic shimmer will do the trick. When I picked out fabric for the Auckland Rose Quilt, I used a light red cotton with gold metallic shimmer. I gifted the quilt to my daughter who likes yellow gold, so it worked out fine. Afterwards, I looked for fabrics with shimmer that wasn’t gold and I was not finding anything. Cue to my discovery of Connecting Threads.

Connecting Threads is US based company that makes 100% American-grown cotton fabric. They have an exclusive Color Wheel Solids collection that is coordinated throughout the site. Their essential threads have the same colors (and names) as the solid fabrics. They use the same fabric colors for their basics and blenders lines. By using the solids swatches, when I order a mirage tonal or pattern play fabric I know what the base color will look like. This is great benefit for a girlie who has to order almost all her fabrics online without seeing and comparing them. According to their website, their fabric is 100% super combed cotton quilting fabric which makes it ultra-soft and high-quality. My inner treehugger is also happy there is an added bonus of the fabric being Oeko-Tex Certified.

I recently used their Somerset Afternoon Tiny Sunburst Tomato Red fabric when making a red-white-blue America’s 250th version of my Weekend Charm pattern. I can attest to the lovely buttery feel. The fabric is woven well and when I had to use my seam ripper, the fabric stayed together and did not start fraying badly.
With all of their collections, they have downloadable swatch files to easily upload into my EQ8 software. Best of all they have a cotton fabric….with silver shimmer!!! The Shimmer Tonals collection is part of their basics and blenders collection (and for my Gold Girlies out there, their Quartz Metallic Tonals collection has gold shimmer). Check out my Color Wheel Solids Teal square against the Teal Shimmer Tonals fabric. That’s a match!

While I was writing this, I noticed Connecting Threads is starting to carry NCAA Fabrics. The selection is small but I look forward to it expanding. Their site also suggests which solids will match your team fabric the best. With the loss of Joann’s Fabric, it is nice to find a shop carrying team fabrics. Overall, the prices are comparable to other brands and are very reasonable for their solids. As an added bonus, Connecting Threads ships to APO/DPO/FPO addresses (a lot of shops in the U.S. won’t or charge extra).
As an FYI – all these opinions are my personal opinions. I was not paid to write this post; I am just genuinely excited to find a silver shimmer fabric.
